Runners & Cyclists

Endurance Athletes

Physical therapy tailored to your sport’s unique demands.

Running

Many runners train forward motion but fail to spend as many hours field running, cutting and working on lateral stability. Over time the imbalances developed in forward running can lead to overuse injuries.

We work to overcome the effects of repetitive stress on injured tissues with a plan of care that takes a runner’s specific areas of strength and weakness into account.

Running rehab can include:

  • Daily movement training: The way you sleep, sit, stand and lift can all affect your running technique, gluteal strength, calf length and hip mobility. We will teach you how to modify movement throughout your day to reduce pain when running.

  • Running biomechanics analysis: We will complete a biomechanical analysis of your running technique using slow motion video technology to look at trunk stability, foot strike, cadence and much more!

  • Shoe style recommendations: We can make recommendations about types of running shoes that are best for you based on your joint range of motion, injury and running style. We are happy to answer questions about running shoes, trends and research in these areas as well.

  • Strengthening and flexibility program: Your comprehensive program will include exercises to address any specific deficits noted during your evaluation.

  • Return to running program: If your pain or injury has limited your training, we will help put together a new training plan that will get you running while being mindful of where you are in the recovery process.

Cycling

As our bodies adapt to our bike posture, we can develop imbalances in joint range of motion as well as muscle stiffness that lead to pain while cycling.

To make matters more difficult, many of these limitations are perpetuated by a life filled with desk work and driving.

The good news is, we can get you back out on the bike pain free with a plan of care designed with your needs as a cyclist and unique body mechanics in mind.

Cycling rehab can include:

  • Daily movement training: The way you sleep, sit, stand and lift throughout your day can all impact how much pain you have while cycling. We will teach you how to modify your daily movement to reduce discomfort when cycling.

  • Bike positioning: Small changes to your fit can allow you to continue cycling without pain while we work to improve your overall posture. We perform bike fits for standard bikes in our clinic to ensure that it is appropriate for your specific pain or injury. After your rehab is completed, we can move you back to a more aerodynamic position based on what your joints will allow and the changes you have been able to make in physical therapy. For bikes with custom parts, we can work closely with a local bike fit professional to make sure that the fit meets your needs based on your current injury and/or history of injury.

  • Equipment recommendations: We can make specific recommendations for quality parts for your bike that will be the right fit for your unique body geometry.

  • Cycling Technique: Learn how tiny changes in cadence and gear usage can minimize stress on injured tissues.

  • Strengthening and flexibility program: Your comprehensive program will include exercises to address any specific deficits noted during your evaluation.

Swimming

Aquatic based movements are unique and require an in-depth understanding and specialized approach to rehabilitation that is vastly different than the rehab required for land athletes.

With our precise care, swimmers can get back in the water for the long-run free of shoulder, back and knee pain.

Swimming rehab can include:

  • Daily movement training: Swimming changes the way you reach, lean and lift. Learn how to improve mechanics throughout your body to minimize joint stress.

  • Swimming stroke analysis: We will assess where in the stroke cycle you are experiencing pain and make recommendations for technique changes that will improve joint posture accordingly. If needed, underwater video analysis will be used to analyze the faults in your biomechanics associated with pain.

  • Swimming equipment: Whether you are competing in open water, training on a local club team or in a Masters program, we can advise you on the types of paddles, fins and wetsuits that will minimize your joint stress.

  • Strengthening and flexibility program: Your comprehensive program will include exercises to address any specific deficits noted during your evaluation.
